USIK CABINET

I set out to redesign a vinyl music cabinet that reflected my personal aesthetic while providing an immersive, multi-sensory experience. The challenge was to seamlessly combine premium materials, aesthetic appeal, and functionality into a cohesive design that evoked emotion and engaged all five senses. By researching the emotion and atmosphere that music evokes, I developed a design that combined these aspects without compromise. Through material testing, I carefully selected material that harmonized with the overall sensory experience, all while blending into the background of any modern home.

I played around with shapes to test out the flow of a ritual and the human interaction. I also asked my classmates to draw out their versions of organic form shapes.

Does it speak for me? About me Originality?

My favorite model that I want to move forward with

I made beginning models from cardboard based off of the organic shapes that my classmates and I created. Then I created weird designs through a mix of modern and vintage and in played between organic or nonorganic shapes to see the difference in between each.

I realized after this design that even though I wanted something organic, the organic I am looking for is not something that is regarding to shapes but rather to the material itself and the texture of the wood with the ease of use as a part of it.

memories and stalemate

I wanted to have a huge shift in my design where I wanted to focus on an “uncovering” of my emotions and music through my furniture piece. Just like how an album is a core memory but there are songs in that album that hold specific memories with a special person and as you

I decided to compress my cabinet into a rectangle which I did like but after making a full scale model again, it did not look right. I then decided to take out the top two cabinets because I deemed it unnecessary and extra and it was not working with my idea well

I wanted to create an experience that involved uncovering a music box. After making full scaled models of legs, simple tapered legs were decided to be the best design to shift the focus onto the the intricacies within the uncovering of the cabinet.

When choosing what type of wood to use, I went through a bunch of samples and ended up choosing walnut and cherry. I also used tree sap oil as the finish to give it a deep rich color as well as an aromatic smell.

The medium is the message means the medium in which we communicate through holds as much value than the message itself

This hit what I wanted where you conceal everything and you open up to my life, music and emotions. It incorporated all the five senses from the sound of music to the ambiance, the smell, the taste, the touch and the sight of the furniture piece.
