The Medium is the Message

Form Sketches

I played around with shapes to test out the flow of a ritual and human interaction. I also asked my classmates to draw out their versions of organic form shapes.

Beginning Idea Sketches Model

I made beginning models from cardboard based on the organic shapes that my classmates and I created. Then I created weird designs through a mix of modern and vintage, and I played between organic and nonorganic shapes to see the difference between each.
Does it speak for me? About me?

My favorite model to move forward with. After this design, I realized that even though I wanted something organic, the organic I am looking for isn't about shapes; it's about the material itself, the wood's texture, and ease of use.
Memories and Stalement
I wanted a major shift in my design, focusing on an “uncovering” of my emotions and music through my furniture piece. Just as an album is a core memory, there are songs in that album that hold specific memories with a special person, and so do you.
Sketches Round 2

Lifesize Model

I decided to compress my cabinet into a rectangle, which I liked, but after making a full-scale model again, it didn't look right. I then decided to remove the top two cabinets because I thought they were unnecessary and extra, and they didn't work well with my idea.
More Lifesize Models/Final decisions

I wanted to create an experience that involved uncovering a music box. After making full-scale models of the legs, I chose simple tapered legs as the best design to shift the focus to the intricacies of uncovering the cabinet.

When choosing the wood type, I reviewed several samples and chose walnut and cherry. I also used tree sap oil as the finish to give it a deep, rich color and an aromatic scent.

My Medium My Message
This hit what I wanted: you conceal everything, and you open up to my life, music, and emotions. It incorporated all five senses, from the sound of the music to the ambiance, the smell, the taste, the touch, and the sight of the furniture piece.
